Abstract: The convergence of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a powerful catalyst for the development of smart cities. By harnessing the vast amounts of data generated by IoT devices and applying advanced analytics techniques, cities can gain valuable insights into urban operations, optimize resource allocation, and improve the quality of life for their citizens. However, realizing the full potential of this synergy presents significant challenges related to data management, privacy, and interoperability. This paper aims to explore the state-of-the-art communication technologies and smart-based applications employed in smart city environments. We will delve into the ways in which big data analytics can revolutionize urban populations at various levels, from infrastructure management to citizen services. Furthermore, we will propose a future business model for big data in smart cities and identify the key research challenges that must be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of smart city initiatives. By providing a comprehensive overview of these issues, this study seeks to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders working towards the development of sustainable and resilient smart cities.
